Is a Memory Foam Mattress Pad Worth It?

We've talked a little bit about memory foam in our discussion on visco elastic. As we discussed there, it is basically just polyurethane with a couple of additives to boost it's density and viscosity. The result is a foam that is firm, but gives when weight is applied. If you have sat on an airplane, or squeezed the headrest in a recent-model car, you have felt what memory foam feels like. It is a material that is unlike most others and has a feeling that is hard to describe. But, those who sleep on it each night swear by its ability to conform to the body, decrease tossing and turning, and promote an overall better night's sleep.

So, if foam is so great, and people enjoy sleeping on it so much, then why is there a market for memory foam mattress pads, and why are you reading this post? Well, as I'm sure you may know, this stuff is expensive. Originally designed by NASA for airplane seats, this material actually only became available to the public market in the early 1980s, and only actually became affordable to the public sector about ten years later. Beginning in the early 1990s, the market for memory foam began to boom. Manufacturers of everything from mattresses, to seat cushions, to pool floats began experimenting with this material to see if they could create better products. Unfortunately, though the material became available, and less cost prohibitive, it has remained to this day very expensive.

Now, that may have been a long winded introduction, but the real reason a market for a memory foam mattress pad topper emerged is because the cost of making an entire mattress out of the stuff is still quite expensive. These sell for well over ,000 and can approach prices of ,000 and more. The benefits, as mentioned above, have long been touted by admirers. Users claim to sleep through the night with ease after switching to memory foam due to a number of reasons. The foam is engineered in such a way that it gives according to how much pressure is applied, and it only gives in the one local area. So, the mattress will sink in more where your hips rest than your feet because the mid-section of you body is much heavier. This allows the sleeper to attain a body position that is more natural that other mattresses allow, or so say the proponents.

But can an isotonic memory foam mattress pad offer the same benefits as a full scale mattress. You may not think so, but studies have shown that these pads can indeed nearly duplicate the effect of having a memory foam mattress, simply by being placed upon a standard mattress. Not bad, right? When you look at the price differential -- a queen memory foam mattress pad, for instance, will cost around 0, the argument becomes very intriguing.

The big thing to look out for is the thickness of the memory foam mattress topper pad that you're buying. There are several companies out there offering 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch thick pads for sale, attempting to simply cash in on the hype and popularity that memory foam has enjoyed in recent years. These often go for prices that look phenomenal, but beware. You'll see almost no benefit from a pad of this thickness. To truly reap the benefits of one of these pads, you need at least an inch in width. After all, the whole purpose of this material is to allow your body ample room to inflict it's will, so to speak, on the surface below. You simply won't get this effect with a pad that is too thin.

My experience with memory foam has been a great one. I don't yet have a full on memory foam mattress, but I suspect that it will come not too far down the road, as I have greatly enjoyed the mattress pad that I have been sleeping on for the last several months. And I don't have a particularly nice mattress, mind you. I have a rather common Sealy, which is nice, but by no means spectacular. I came across the memory foam pads sort of by accident. I have had my mattress for about two years, but it wasn't until several months ago that I began waking up with shoulder pains. Knowing that I couldn't afford to simply replace the mattress, I decided to see if a modification of some kind might do the trick. I'm happy to say that augmenting my insufficient mattress with one of these pads did the trick in a big way. I now wake up feeling great, and can honestly say that I owe it all to making this switch. Buying one of these pads was a great way to test-drive memory foam, so to speak, without buying an expensive new mattress. But with the way I feel about it at this point, it may not be long before I bite the bullet. So, Is a memory foam mattress pad worth it? Absolutely.

No one says playing Santa to her Mrs. Claus has to be a droll endeavor. The holidays, in fact, are the ideal time for her personal Santa to get a little naughty with the gift giving. Treat her to dinner in bed, served on an elegant silver tray. Once she has eaten, make sure there is a special dessert on hand. No one says it has to be edible!

Make sure you pick them out personally, so you can fill the card out. Promise to make all of her holiday dreams come true. You know, the ones she would not share with just anyone. If possible, slip in a reservation card for her favorite restaurant and a gift card for her favorite lingerie shop. She'll know exactly what you mean by making allof her dreams come true!

Massage oils.

This is one of my absolute favorite sensual gifts. There is simply no better way to warm up a lady and treat her right than by softly and slowly using a magic touch to help her relax, unwind and get away from it all. With a little practice, that magic touch in all the right places can leave her hungry and purring for more.

Save the jewelry, clothes and other gifts for the tree, but do not miss out on the more personal ways to show your own Mrs. Claus just how special she is. A night or day of pampering will light her fire and warm her heart.

If a home already has enough bedrooms, a family room addition is often a useful addition to increase the amount of square footage in a home and increase the functionality.

Where an addition is placed on a house will vary depending on the layout of the home and actual site conditions. If there is space on the site that allows for a family room addition on the main level of a home, I often look for a location near the kitchen. If there is no space on the site for a ground level addition, we'll either look at a location such as in an unfinished basement, or consider adding onto a second story. One recent trend we are finding is locating a family space adjacent to bedrooms, especially if the space is located adjacent to kid's bedrooms. This family room space often becomes the kid's 'hang out space'.

Often a family room plays many roles, so it's important to design the space to allow for the functions you need. Here are some things to consider:

1. While it's nice to have a separate media room, often the space or funds are not available for this luxury. Consider designing the family room to accommodate movie night by incorporating room darkening black-out shades and the necessary electronic equipment and speakers.

2. If you often need a place for extra guests to sleep, a family room can be converted easily to a sleeping area if you incorporate the right furniture. A queen size sleeper sofa can comfortably sleep two (look for ones with an inflatable mattress topper for additional comfort. Also standard size sheets will fit better since the mattresses are as thick as a conventional ones). If additional sleeping space, or individual beds are desired for activities like kid's sleepovers, then look for furniture such as ottomans and chairs that fold out to single beds. If you have the space, you may also be able to incorporate a day bed. For additional sleeping, look for a day bed with a trundle below (these are also great for kid's bedrooms for a friend who sleeps over).

3. One of the complaints we frequently hear about homes is that the dining room is too small for big family get togethers. But when asked how often people entertain large groups, it is often only once or twice a year. A family room addition can help solve this problem if space is designed in for a large expanding table.

4. A large table is also useful in a family room because inevitably kids will end up doing their homework where the family gathers. A large table is a perfect multipurpose addition to the family room. To save space, it can even be placed with an end against a wall surface, and pulled out when additional seating is needed.

Once you've identified all the necessary functions that the new family room needs to accommodate, you'll want to start designing the details such as fireplaces, the TV location, and furniture layouts. The primary issue with incorporating a fireplace in a family room is that it competes for the same space as the TV. There are many ways to solve this problem, with the obvious one being placing the TV above the fireplace. Be careful with this solution, though, as it can lead to an uncomfortably high viewing angle. Often incorporating a television that is adjacent to the fireplace, or arranging a seating group that is at right angles where one side faces a television and the other side faces a fireplace can solve this problem.

When possible we like to expand the family room addition to the outside by adding French doors or sliding doors. A deck or patio outside a family room can help make a smaller room feel larger.

A well designed family room can serve many purposes if well thought through in the planning stages. This often means thinking ahead and planning the type of furniture, the size and location of the television, and the location of the fireplace. But once you figure out all the pieces of the puzzle, they can be assembled into an artful solution that integrates into the existing house and provides a new space that will serve your family well for many years in the future.

What is Visco-Fresh Memory Foam?
